4 Reasons Why Swearing Can Be Beneficial For Your Health

A common trait that most adults share, regardless of race or location, is that we swear. Whether it is a frequent occurrence to pepper your conversations with expletives, or if you only say them on rare occasions, you are experiencing some pretty good side-effects.

Some people might frown upon swearing, and think it is degrading, oafish behaviour- but it’s not. Well, not always. Swearing has some good aspects as well, and the act of saying a “bad word” can have many unexpected benefits.

1. Relieves pain and increases pain tolerance.shutterstock_274692137
If you are a “chain-swearer,” or someone who uses swear words like a sailor who was trained by Andrew Dice Clay, then you are probably not going to experience this benefit as much as someone who speaks them only a few times a day.

For the latter,  they will experience a surge of adrenaline when the ‘fight or flight’ response is activated, from swearing.

This triggers and analgesic effect, and can effectively alter our pain perception.

2. Control and confidence.
Swearing can help us to release our fears and gain control over our feelings in certain situations. When we swear, we are showing ourselves that we are not powerless and can fight back- even if it is with mere words.

Saying a swear word can give you confidence, especially if you rarely use them. Like Mark Twain said, ‘When angry, count to four; when very angry, swear.’shutterstock_175843565

3. Self-expression.
When something is important to you, swearing can elevate that feeling and let others know as well. Take  football games for example.

Fans swear all the time to express outrage towards the referees, or immense joy when their team scores. Swearing  allows you to express yourself in ways that suit your moods and emotions, whether they be good or bad.

4. Mental and physical health.
“Sentence enhancers,” as I like to call them, can do some things of which you might not be aware.  Psychology Today says, “The health benefits of swearing include increased circulation, elevated endorphins, and an overall sense of calm, control, and well-being. ”

It is important to keep in mind that we are all unique individuals and people who swear are not less of anything because they do so. They are not less spiritual, less intelligent, or less imaginative. Keep your judgments to yourself, and let people live their lives in the ways that works best for them.

Besides, it’s good for you.

Seaweed: The Superfood You’re Probably Not Eating (But Should Be)

By now, we all know the benefits of superfoods like kale, spirulina, and wheatgrass, but have you heard of the myriad of health benefits seaweed can offer?

Living in a Westernized society, we might eat seaweed in our California rolls, but it’s not typical behaviour for someone to snack on a bag of the stuff. Well, maybe it should be! After reading all the ways in which seaweed can benefit your health, you might develop an urge to start including it in your diet.shutterstock_354696803

  • Seaweed is a natural anti-oxidant, and is high in iodine and calcium. Have you been eating some rather unhealthy foods lately? More and more labels read “irradiated” and “modified” ingredients. A healthy dose of seaweed can help to combat those toxins.
  • Shona  Wilkinson, the head nutritionist at NutriCentre explained, “It is a natural source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D and E as well as minerals including zinc, iodine, magnesium, iron, potassium, copper and is especially high in calcium. It is also very high in iodine. We need iodine for efficient thyroid and pituitary function. The thyroid is responsible for regulating metabolism and body temperature. “
  • Seaweed can help reach and maintain a healthy weight, by being a useful diuretic. Those who struggle with water retention will find this doubly useful. An additional functionality of diuretic properties, seaweed also cleanses the system. Continue reading

Meet The 100 Year Old Man Who Built The Venus Project: The City Of The Future

Somewhere amidst the lush greenery of central Florida, lies The Venus Project: a tropical paradise of the future.

The beautiful model city was designed and created by Jacque Fresco, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.

Jacque is a self-proclaimed social engineer, and Futurist– “scientists and social scientists whose specialty is futurology, or the attempt to systematically explore predictions and possibilities about the future and how they can emerge from the present, whether that of human society in particular or of life on Earth in general.”

The Venus Project is the start of what Fresco likes to call,  a “resource-based economy.”

The 21-acre property had humble beginnings, starting out as a tomato farm for Fresco and his family. Now, however, Venus Project devotees visit from all over the world, even as far away as Australia. The buildings, infrastructure, and ideas Fresco has implemented are revolutionary, to say the least.

Dome-shaped buildings are used for several reasons: they require less material to fabricate, the shape gives maximum support and strength, withstands extreme winds and even earthquakes, and they are made from concrete so no trees will be cut down to make them.

Fresco believes he has the perfect working model for the City of the Future. He told Bloomberg this city will be run without the use of money, and there won’t be any politicians. Continue reading

4 Ways To Soothe An Angry Mind & Release Pent Up Rage

For as long as I can remember, I have had an anger problem. I don’t mean occasionally becoming upset; we all have moments like that from time to time. No, what I am referring to is rage, pure and simple. The kind of rage that makes your body feel like there is a fire growing inside,  your blood pounds through your veins and all sense of clarity is found only within your fury.

If you have ever experienced that kind of anger, then you understand how utterly it can consume your life. On top of that, no one really wants to be around someone who is always ready to fly off the handle, and constantly being angry increases blood pressure, which can cause all sorts of heath issues, even death.

Finding a solution to my anger issue wasn’t as easy as I would have liked it to have been, but I eventually did come across a few tips which helped the healing process take  place.

Keep a journal.

Writing-For-The-Web-Follow-These-Top-10-TipsBy keeping a journal, you can jot down what really ticks you off, and when it does do.

You will start to notice a pattern, and that is incredibly important.

Finding out what triggers your anger is vital to understanding why  it gets triggered in the first place. Continue reading

How to Make A Natural Insect Repellent That Works Better Than DEET

Plan on getting some fresh air this weekend? Leave the chemical-laden bug spray at home. This all-natural insect repellent will keep the critters away, and leave a pleasant scent.

Besides being painful and annoying, certain insect bites or stings can transmit potentially harmful diseases, like Lyme disease or West Nile virus.shutterstock_168821852

Surprisingly, most Americans (75%) are more concerned with the effects of an insect bite, than the effects of the chemicals found in popular insect repellents.

DEET, or N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) is one of those harmful chemicals, and it is the number one ingredient in popular insect repellents. DEET is a registered pesticide, and is absorbed through the skin, then passes into the bloodstream. Continue reading
